You've haven't lived until you've tried a Kobe beef burger with a layer of habanero chili paste on it with onions and horseradish .... Called, the Habanero Burger, it's served at the Prince of Wales Pub in San Mateo, California.

Ever try a habanero chili? It is a whole different universe of hot-spicy. The casual diner beware - it is an obsenely hot burger .... which I happen to like. It's used as a rite of passage for many silicon valley employees - to have to finish a habanero burger. I love them even though I end up hating myself for the next whole day after I've eaten one (you know what I mean ....).

my favorite is a 49'er sandwich its bacon, turkey, sliced tomato, thousand island dressing (homemade), swiss cheese and cheddar (if you want it), on large slices of sour dough bread then you fry it up like a grilled cheese sammich cut it in half and serve

One of my favorite sandwiches of all time doesn't exist anymore. Sure, it's really simple, but it never tasted the same after the cafè/bar that served it burned down and the owner rebuilt the whole thing as a posh lounge thingy (loosing customers that frequented the place for more than twenty years in the process..)

Anyway, the thing was called a Bauerntoast (-> farmer's toast) and consisted of two large slices of fresh brown bread (it had to be done with the G'staubter Wecken, the traditional viennese bread), with tyrolean bacon ham and emmentaler cheese in between. The whole thing was toasted and served with fresh vegetables and ketchup. Simple but yummy. I think the real secret of the whole thing was, that all ingredients were fresh no industry products -> the bacon and cheese came from small austrian farms and the bread from a small bakery.

I know, it's nothing fancy, but I've got fond memories of ordering a Bauerntoast late in the evening after drinking way too much beer as a teen..

ahh, the good ole' days...
